Outdoor Learning

Operation Play Outdoors work with a wide range of schools, including Primary, Secondary and ASN Schools. Our work with schools is completely tailored to fit the needs and abilities of the students as well as the experiences and outcomes highlighted with the Curriculum for Excellence. We have a wide range of options for schools looking to increase their outdoor learning provision and will arrange a time to meet with you to discuss your requirements and desired outcomes.

At Operation Play Outdoors we are on a mission to increase outdoor learning opportunities, raising awareness of the benefits associated with getting your class outdoors, the endless learning opportunities available as well as addressing the common concern around the weather and its impact on outdoor learning opportunities. The rain doesn’t stop us, we have lots of experience in creating exciting and educational programmes that work well in all weathers. See some of programme options below and get in touch if you’d be interested in bringing more outdoor learning opportunities to your school.

Loose Parts Play Trailer

This is an exciting and popular programme for children to experience loose parts play. We have created a ‘Loose Parts Play Trailer’ full of exciting loose parts and materials for children to get outdoors and get creative. The trailer is dropped off to your school, and hired on a weekly basis giving students throughout the school lots of opportunities to try loose parts, either during class time or at lunch.

All materials are provided and every hire includes an initial 30min induction for staff, as well as a half day of support from one of our team during the first week of hire.

Groupwork Program

Targeted group work sessions working with small groups, up to 4 children, taking them outdoors to learn a variety of outdoor activities designed to build their confidence, develop their resilience, learn to work together and other outcomes specific to the student’s needs. The sessions would be 1 hour long and delivered on your school grounds. We can work with multiple groups across the day. These programmes benefit children who might be struggling with classroom dynamics, offering an alternative lesson outdoors, linked to the curriculum and tailored to their needs and abilities

Outdoor Learning Class Program

We have seven set outdoor learning programmes which can be offered to classes across the school. We would take classes out for 1hr 15min sessions, one session per week for six weeks. In this time, children would be introduced to a wide range of outdoor learning activities, all linked to the theme they have chosen as well as being linked to the curriculum, targeting many health and wellbeing outcomes, but also numeracy and literacy. Children would take part with their classes doing a variety of class, small group and individual challenges all designed to learn more about their theme and progress their skills.

Our Outdoor Learning themes to choose from are:

  • Woodwork
  • Loose Parts and STEM
  • Woodlands
  • Wildlife
  • Minibeasts
  • Materials
  • Weather

Our sessions include all materials for two classes as well as two staff delivering the programme. We can deliver up to three classes per day with an additional cost for the third class.

There are optional extras including the John Muir Award and in class activities/materials for an additional cost.

Off Site Trips

We can arrange a variety of excursions and larger outdoor learning away days and school trips. For smaller groups of 14 or less we can take groups away using our own minibus to various sites across Glasgow and beyond. For larger class trips we can facilitate larger activity days and woodland experiences to parks and woodlands throughout Glasgow and further afield. The activities provided would be tailored to the size, age and abilities of the group as well as to the site we work from. Enquire now if you’d like us to organise your class trip or school excursion.

Equipment Hire

We are aware that there is already lots of great outdoor learning going on in many schools and you might not be able to bring us in to deliver sessions for you. We have created an equipment hire facility which allows schools to deliver programmes for themselves with specific equipment provided by us for you to use in class and outdoors. This allows you to keep the cost of your outdoor learning down but give children the chance to try a wide variety of outdoor learning activities, you then don’t have to worry about long term storage or buying something that only gets used once a year. Please see our equipment hire page for more information.

Not sure what outdoor learning experience
to choose from?

As always, if you feel you are looking for something slightly different that is not detailed above, please get in touch and we’d be happy to meet with you to discuss your schools needs.

We also offer a range of outdoor learning equipment and products for purchase
